After a year of development hell, TMNT: Out of the Shadows has finally made it’s way to Playstation 3. The wait was due to Redfly fixing the issues present in the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game, but was it worth waiting nearly a year to get for Playstation gamers to finally kick some shell?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a 2013-2014 action beat ’em up. It is developed by Redfly Games and published by Activision. It is available on PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

Shell yeah!

Shell yeah!

I’ve been playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games for as long as I can remember. As a kid I would buy every game that was available to the console I own, and would often have a blast playing the co-op with my brother. When I found out that Out of the Shadow would have seamless four player co-op I was as happy as a kid in a candy store. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do four player co-op myself, but Redfly was smart enough to compensate with those who couldn’t find anyone to play with, or who could only do couch co-op by giving us all four turtles on screen regardless.

The combos in Out of the Shadows are freaking awesome.

THE GOOD: Taking it’s inspiration from all forms of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles media, Out of the Shadows features elements from not only the 2012 TMNT series, but also the original comics, the films, and even past TV series and games. The OST is pretty cool, but admittedly it can get a little old hearing some of the same tracks on different levels. The combat in Out of the Shadows is absolutely amazing, again taking elements from all forms of TMNT media.

Co-Op in the flesh.

All four turtles on screen for the first time.

Players can upgrade their turtles with a skill tree that gives them health and attack bonuses. You can also upgrade your weaponry in Donatello’s lab. The good thing is every turtle feels different when you play as each of them. For example Michelangelo has a speedy moveset and and back enemies off pretty quickly, while Raphael has a more power house moveset inspired by MMA.  The tag team finishers is one of the most awesome things I’ve ever seen in a TMNT game, and the best part is they’re pretty easy to pull off.

Turtle Power dude!

THE BAD: The cast from the 2012 series don’t reprise their role, so that means no Jason Biggs and the like. Difficulty wasn’t the best it could have been, but there was some challenge especially when soloing.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Out of the Shadows isn’t the greatest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game out there, but it’s damn close to it. Taking elements from all TMNT lore, it’s every Turtles fan gaming dream. The team work with the Turtles was fantastically done and combat was pretty great. There some issues with difficulty here and there, and unfortunately the cast of the 2012 series wasn’t used. Still the PS3 version of Out of the Shadows is pretty great.
