The Walking Dead’s ” All That Remains” continues where TellTale’s epic left off. As suspected during the climax of season one, Clementine was able to catch up with Omid and Christa and the three have been traveling together for months. Soon after being reintroduced to the three characters however, all hell breaks lose for the players.

Warning Spoilers: Full spoilers for this episode and season one are mentioned throughout this review, if you have yet to play through either avoid this review until doing so beforehand. You have been warned.

THE GOOD:  Playing as Clementine compared to Lee is an entirely different animal. For one thing, she’s still a child and due to the time skip she can’t be anymore than about 10 years old, which puts the emotion that will be felt throughout this season on an entirely different level.  While Lee was a sympathetic adult who made his “bad” choices because he (or the player)  felt it was necessary in order to protect Clem, the way I viewed Clementine making these choices didn’t feel this way. After losing Omid (which she likely feels responsible for) and splitting from Christa, Clementine becomes a totally different person. Depending on player choices she can be manipulative, arrogant, and just down right mean.

If one could compare 10 year old Clementine to anyone, it would definitely be Carl Grimes from The Walking Dead TV/Comic series. Clementine, like Carl was forced to grow up into a world that neither wanted to. A world full of danger at every corner with death being almost a certainty. Both learned to defend themselves from father figures and have survived some tough times. Now both have changed from the innocent children they once were and are more in control of their emotions to the point of using them against others if they feel it’s necessary.

I have to admit seeing Clementine be so comfortable with a gun was a bit nerve wrecking, which is funny because when I see Carl with a gun I think “oh man, how bad ass!”, but when I see Clem with it, it just breaks my heart somewhat.  The new characters introduced in season 2 are interesting, mostly Uncle Pete’s relationship with nephew Nick. Another relationship that will likely have more impact in future episodes is Clem’s relationship with Luke who will act as a new “Big Brother” like figure to her.  I’m also interested in how things will go with Clementine’s friendship with Sarah, I don’t exactly to expect it to be similar to her friendship with Duck, due to Sarah’s father Carlos putting friction between the two.

THE BAD: Some times QTEs were too fast and made cheap deaths happen frequently.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: All That Remains is a fantastic continuation of TellTale’s The Walking Dead. Playing as Clementine is on a whole other level of dynamic compared to playing as Lee last season.  The new Clementine gives player a chance to experience a completely different person from the character we once knew, one only comparable to that of Carl Grimes epic character development in the TV/Comic series. The QTEs were noticeably faster than usual this time around which brought cheap deaths frequently, but with excellent character development, writing and gameplay it won’t stop fans from enjoying.
