It’s Batman: Arkham Asylum meets Uncharted in this brand new IP by Capcom and Dontnod Entertainment.

Remember Me is a 2013 action-adventure, beat ’em up developed by Dontnod Entertainment, and published by Capcom. Set in 2084 Neo Paris, France it stars player character Nilin Cartier-Wells, a memory hunter out to find her missing memory as well as stopping the corrupt Memorize corporation who’s goal is to replace or revive memories of humans.

These creepy bastards are called Leapers, and you fight them alot.

THE GOOD:  Combat is very fluid, taking after the combat stye of Batman: Arkham Asylum you can attack, dodge, and even continue your combo chain after dodging if you time things correctly, platforming was reminiscent of the Uncharted franchise, and there was a bit of Dead Space as well when it came time to use the spammer. The music was a mix of emotional, action, and energetic techno/dubstep.

That scenery!

Graphically, Remember Me is Capcom’s most beautiful game to date,  everything looked great from in-game to cutscenes.  Remember Me features a “combat lab” where you can increase and improve combos with different strike variations, including chain, heavy damage, health recovery, and cool down strikes.  There’s “sensense” moves you can perform that does certain effects to enemies like stun, knock down, and you can even increase your speed for more strikes and longer combo chains.

Nilin performing an overload.

The story seems to have been heavily inspired by Tron,  though I won’t go into any further details than that due to possible spoilers. Overall the story was great and got emotionally heavy very quickly, there’s also one moment in particular that involves Nilin that may mind fuck you, so watch out for it.

Don’t think the Leapers can get any creepier? These dudes only take damage in light.

THE BAD: Despite being inspiring by Uncharted, platforming felt clunky. Even the stupidest mistake could kill you if you weren’t extremely careful. Combat was a bit repetitive and limited, by the time you complete the game there’s only four combo chains to unlock.  Puzzles were mixed from difficult to extremely easy, for example the remix memory puzzles were so difficult that I chose to use an online guide to push through the remaining remix puzzles after my first experience.

More scenery from Remember Me.

Bosses had little to no impact, most felt like regular enemies, and there were really only three true boss fights throughout the game.  Attempting to continue a combo chain through dodging wasn’t always on point either. Half the time you struggle to keep a chain going after dodging an enemy attack.

A boss that should have felt bigger than he was.

Sometimes you’d find yourself running and gunning with the spammer due to too many enemies ganging up on your, or more than one over powered enemy fighting you, it would seriously slow combat down, but this was a minor annoyance, rather than an actual issue.

Nilin preparing a Sensense.

THE UGLY: There was an issue with lip syncing during earlier cut scenes in the game and it was a bit off putting watching them.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:  Remember Me is a fun and challenging game, but got too difficult during some gameplay and puzzles. Music and the graphics were amazing, platforming wasn’t always as smooth, despite it’s Uncharted like feel.  And the story has seemingly been inspired by Tron.

One Response so far.

The game was pretty damn good. But it felt lacking in some departments. The combat though fluid felt clunky as you said, The dodges half the time did not even work so you couldnt continue a combo. Was rather frustrating but not bad overall. The story had some great twists in my honest opinion. I’d play it just for the story, though the gameplay was rather addicting. The character you felt like you could connect with. Though most were just a brief introduction and death and that was about it.
Overall though. I agree with your review, Great game that could have been so much more.
