Streaming service Hulu and actress Eva Longoria team up for a raunchy animated series about a professional/Hollywood mother having to deal with regular mother-hood after her husband leaves her. Is the new series a new reason to give Hulu a try for those on the fence? Is it worth the time of animated comedy fans period?

eva-motherup-110613spMother Up! is an 2013 animated comedy that stars Eva Longoria. it is available exclusively on Hulu.

WARNING: Full to near complete spoilers for all 6 currently stream able episodes for Mother Up! are posted below. If you have yet to see any of these episodes or are still thinking of giving this series a try, avoid this review until having done so. You have been warned.

I’m always on the fence when it comes to new animated series in the vein of Family Guy or South Park, no matter where it’s coming from TV or the internet, but something about Mother Up! appealed to me when I first took notice of it on the Hulu website. For something that was made with Adobe Flash it’s animation it’s is pretty damn stellar. With an already successful first attempt at animation in The Awesomes, Hulu looks to have another animated winner with Mother Up!, obviously it’s form of comedy won’t be for everyone, and some may avoid it simply for being hung up on the old Adobe Flash hate, which is a rather unfair and silly way to start judging an animated series in my opinion.

Rudi, Dick, and Apple.

This isn’t the first time Eva Longoria has executive produced a TV series, her previous history as Executive Producer includes Lifetime’s Devious Maids, NBC’s Ready for Love, Trust, and others. I’ve personally never seen anything that Longoria was Executive Producer of besides Mother Up!, but from what I’ve heard she seems to be somewhat successful in the position. Mother Up! features a vast array of characters from rude and arrogant Rudi, to the energetic, optimistic swim coach, Greg Simmons. from the mean spirited Jenny, to the kind-hearted , caring Sarah.

THE GOOD: Mother Up! has some pretty funny moments during it’s pilot episode, most notably the opening scene that featured Rudi, Rapper 2Bit, and Rudi’s former boss (who’s name I didn’t quite catch). It led to a chase scene between Rudi and her boss who was on the verge of firing Rudi due to an incident that was causing bad PR for their firm, “Ha not my real hair”, “Ha, not my real ass!”. There was also a funny episode involving Rudi and Apple who had a new obsession over an vending machine, which she referred to as “Machine Mommy”, ironically enough due to Rudi’s lack of attention towards her.

The animation of Mother Up! comes off pretty well for something made in Flash. It even looks like it could have been aired on Comedy Central or Adult Swim. The characters were a pretty interesting group, like the aforementioned Rudi & 2Bit, who comes to the former for advice. Most of the plots are interesting enough to keep your attention span, like Rudi having a strange obsession over her shoes, or Dick ordering a pet monkey.

THE BAD:  Some of the jokes can fall pretty flat, as can the B story like Apple, Dick, and Greg being afraid of a plastic witch. It didn’t really bring the laughs that it tried to.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Mother Up! is a nice addition to Hulu’s animated line up, but it’s style of comedy and animation obviously won’t appeal to some. The group of characters introduced throughout the first 6 episodes are fun to watch, and most of the plots are funny. Though some jokes and B stories fall a little flat compared to other jokes and episodes. Still Mother Up! is a decent animated series & deserves at least a first glance from animation fans. Otaku Dome gives Mother Up! Season One, Part I an 75 out of 100.
