The conclusion to A Certain Magical Index, and heroes Tomo and Index has been reached in the season two, part two blu-ray release. Did the journey actually pay off for the heroes, or did it fall short in comparison to it’s manga counterpart?

A Certain Magical Index II is anĀ  2010 Shonen anime series, it is the sequel to A Certain Magical Index. The series is produced by J. C. Staff and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and streaming services.

The finale to Toma & Index’s story has finale come to an end, the ending was somewhat lukewarm admittedly, though I’m not sure if this was due to them hinting at a possible third season (which could very well be the case), or if this was a non-canon anime ending. The light novels are still ongoing with fresh content, including an ongoing spinoff focusing on Accelerator, which could also get adapted due to Accelerator’s popularity and the Mikasa spinoff, so an eventual third season seems highly possible, especially given the recent film release. Overall season two provided some nice action and I enjoyed every major character getting their moment, but some cliffhangers remaining unsolved kind of annoyed me.

An interesting cast of characters helped bring out A certain Magical Index's story.

THE GOOD: The characters and good mix of light and dark elements made A certain Magical Index (I & II), feel like a unique deviation from the average Shonen anime. Yes there was plenty of ecchi, but not nearly enough to to take away from the plot or anything like that. The action, while light would usually produce some well put together sequences, and the OST was excellently composed by Maiko Luchi.

Toma is sent on an incredible journey after meeting Index.

THE BAD: There were some unresolved storylines such as Index’s past and her magical knowledge, as well as Toma’s memory loss issue. Both are sort of forgotten about in the latter parts of season two, this isn’t too big of a problem as I’m sure at least one of these will be touched upon again in future installments of the anime, but it was an annoyance.

Accelerator was used brilliantly to execute the darker elements of the series.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: A Certain Magical Index II provided a great time with the Espers vs magicians storyline. Though it didn’t necessarily conclude and left more questions than answers, the overall ending of season two hints at season three or an Accelerator spinoff. There were some storylines that were forgotten about, which was annoying, but A Certain Magical Index II was overall a very satisfying continuation. Otaku Dome gives A certain Magical Index II Part Two an 83 out of 100.
