The place holder for season three of Telltale’s The Walking Dead focuses on popular canon character Michonne. Taking place sometime during her leave of Rick Grimmes’ group, Michonne finds herself on a ship with Pete and his crew. A good amount of time has seemingly passed as the crew has grown quite fond of Michonne since her addition to their crew.

Taking place some time during the events of issues 126 to 139, The Walking Dead: Michonne focuses on fan favorite Michonne, the machete wielding main character of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead. Finding herself alone and hallucinating, Michonne wonders about the world of the undead until she comes across the aide of Pete and his ship crew. After spending an unknown amount of time with Pete’s crew, Michonne becomes a fond member of his group. However, trouble soon brews for Michonne, Pete, and his crew as they meet Stormin’ Norma and her hot head brother Randall.

THE GOOD: Nine times out of ten when a story involves Michonne fans of The Walking Dead are usually in for a fun ride. That never stops being the case with Telltale’s Michonne miniseries. We get some new background on the once mysterious blade wielding character, and trusted ally of Rick Grimmes. New gameplay elements were interesting to toy around with, while also potentially giving us a glimpse into season three’s control scheme.  Michonne’s story while quick, was an interesting piece of narrative given how closed the character is initially portrayed. Granted we still don’t know what the status of her daughters are (though it’s hinted they may be dead), her relationship with Sam and her family shows how much growth Michonne has gone through the past several years since her introduction.

Michonne's excellent growth as a character.

THE BAD: Some of the choices in The Walking Dead: Michonne felt far too linear compared to other seasons where there was clearly a consequence to each choice made, but here the episodes just felt too scripted. Michonne’s story kind of ends on an ambiguous cliffhanger as well, with no actual resolve as to her rejoining Rick and co.

Linear story holds Michonne back.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: The Walking Dead: Michonne is ok for the amount of time we spend with her. The story while good, felt too scripted and linear compared to not only past The Walking Dead series, but also past Telltale episodic adventures. However, it’s interesting enough as a placeholder for The Walking Dead Season 3 which releases sometime this year.
