If you want a good idea of what SENRAN KAGURA Burst is, just look at a gameplay trailer of the game and you’ll pretty much know. You should also have a good idea of whether or not the game will be something you’d be into you. Needless to say, SENRAN KAGURA Burst is a game that takes no shame in what it is and those that are into it will find a fairly satisfying action game with plenty of content to last you a while.

In SENRAN KAGURA Burst you’ll follow the stories of a group of high school girls who are also secretly trained ninjas, as they go through deal with life’s obstacles and rival ninjas. There is also a separate campaign where you’ll assume control of those other rival ninjas from a different school.

SENRAN KAGURA Burst is a simple beat ’em up style game where your character will be pitted against multiple hordes of enemies. You’ll be moving through levels from group to group until the level is complete. You’ll have variations occasionally, like trying to defeat a certain amount enemies within a time limit and even boss fights.

The most noticeable thing about SENRAN KAGURA Burst is with its character designs, as the game is full of female characters who sport some “busty” features. Also, the game fully embraces it’s character designs by pulling off lots of fan-service moments, like zoom-ins on the chest and upskirts. And the fact that there are mechanics that will have characters getting undressed into their underwear whenever they transform and their clothes get ripped up when they take too much damage.

The Good: It’s easy to get into SENRAN KAGURA Burst, thanks to it’s simple controls and mechanics. You have your light and heavy attacks, with a jump and dash button as well. Combos are easy to pull off, and are always satisfying. More especially so when you pull off combos in the 1000s.

It can get button-mashy, but the combat does have some depth. You can pull off special ninja attacks for each character, and transforming to your Shinobi mode will help replenish your health. There’s also a Frantic mode you can opt in before the start of a mission, which will strip your character of their clothes and leave them in their underwear. Frantic mode is a risky thing as it will lower your defense but greatly increase your attack power. As you progress in the game and level up your characters, you’ll earn new moves to pull off. And since there are multiple characters to play as, there is lots of variety, since each character plays differently from others with their own set of advantages and timings.

Like all beat ’em ups, the gameplay is straightforward and can get repetitive. That is still the case with SENRAN KAGURA Burst. The levels are fairly short though, so the game can be tolerable in short bursts. There’s also plenty of unlocks and story to go through, making the the content plentiful. So if you don’t mind the repetitive nature, you’ll get a lot of mileage from this game.

The Bad: The main thing I can see being a problem with many is that this game does feature high school girls getting their clothes shred and the characters can be very revealing. The camera angles also focus a lot on these character’s busty features as they occur. If these Anime tropes are a turn off to you, chances are you won’t have a pleasant time with SENRAN KAGURA Burst. It can be ridiculous, but I get such a overall ridiculous nature from this type of game that I don’t mind it as much. I’ve also seen plenty of Anime with these kinds of moments that it’s really nothing new for me.

One other problem with the game is that it does have framerate issues. The game will often have several framerate slowdowns (even with the 3D off) when the fighting gets heavy. I never found it to be a huge problem to the gameplay, but it’s still unfortunate.

Overall Thoughts: As I mentioned earlier in my review, just watch any gameplay trailer of this game and you’ll have a good idea on whether this game is something you’ll come to enjoy to not. For those that don’t mind the heavy Anime aesthetic, you’ll find a pretty solid action beat ’em up with just enough variety and content to make your time with it feel worthwhile and satisfying. I would even go as far to say that the Anime parts of this game are what help make SENRAN KAGURA Burst such a unique and enjoyable experience.

SENRAN KAGURA Burst is only available digitally on the Nintendo eShop at a price of $29.99 for North America.
