Disney Interactive Studios takes a page out of Activision’s book and releases a toy-to-game title; Disney Infinity. Does it bring the Activision powerhouse the competition it needs or is it a good try gone bad?

THE GOOD: Disney Infinity opens would a beautiful opening level/cinematic that players go through explaining some of what can be done throughout the game’s world (or worlds) and how it works. This level alone shows just how much thought and effort was put in the development of this game. n Disney Infinity you have a variety of options to work with due the different characters and playsets. From Toy Story to Monsters University to the worlds of more recent Disney titles such as The Lone Ranger and the upcoming Frozen. And with these mutiple characters and the toy box mode these options grow even further.

Every playset has their own set storyline and missions which usually follows the films they are from. The toy store allows a player to purchase material from the current playsets such as the Incredibles’ glider, bombs for Jack Sparrow, etc. Power disc provide more material such as power ups and extra vehicles, like Mike’s car in the Monsters Inc. short “Mike’s New Car”. The emphasis on creativity with the toy box is fantastic leaving most of the limitations to the imagination.

THE BAD: Not every character is voiced by their film counterparts if at all, and when the difference is noticeable, it’s seriously noticeable (see James P. Sullivan). Though the different voices never come off as just down right unbearable, but it is quite heartbreaking if your a big Disney fan who grew up on these characters. The multiple Disney universe interacting with one another being limited to the toy box was also a bit heartbreaking.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Disney Infinity brings much needed competition to the Skylanders franchise and game model. With multiple options of play and loads to do throughout the world,  but the certain lack of voices from the characters’ film counterparts is a heartbreaking but easy to overcome issue. The characters’ of the Disney Universe having interactions with one another being limited to the toy box is also upsetting.
