Well, that didn’t take long. Google’s little dongle released Wednesday, and didn’t waste anytime selling out from major online vendors, Amazon and Best Buy – Chromecast is still available from the Play Store, but you’ll have to wait 3-4weeks for it to ship. If you can’t wait, Best Buy does show where you can find them in-store, but you can’t buy online and pickup-in-store, so you run the risk of Chromecast being sold out when you arrive… bummer. Similarly, while Amazon is sold out, they do show ‘independent resellers’ with Chromecast’s just waiting to be purchase – that is, if you want to pay up to and over double Chromecast’s $35 retail price.

Chromecast, like Roku and Apple TV, is a device you plugin up to your Tv and stream online media from providers like Netflix and Youtube. Where Chromecast differs is in it’s features – both physical and technological. Physically, at about 2inches long, it’s worlds smaller than either Roku or Apple TV. However, like the others, it requires power. Chromecast comes with two options to power the dongle, a standard wall plug, and a USB to Micro-USB that you can plug into your TV’s USB port – if it has one.

Another thing to keep in mind, beside the possibility of needing an extra outlet, is that Chromecast doesn’t come with a remote, you have to supply one via Smartphone or Tablet. I know it’s hard to imagine, but some people do not have either – I can picture your bewildered look now as you’re reading this on a subway or bus, surrounded by people with heads’ bowed to their device’s cold blue glow – but it’s true. Anyone with an Android or iOS device will have no problem, though Android users get the added benefit of access to Google TV and Movies, as well as Google Music.
