It seems as if both the Skylanders & Disney Infinity camps are getting ready to make some big announcements for their toy to games franchises. Earlier this week Disney Interactive sent out invitations to press for an event that focuses on their new toy to game franchise which made it’s debut last August. The title which featured a number of new and classic Disney characters in an open world adventure game that sold quite well, along with the extra content such as toy boxes, and figures, so it was only natural that a second entry would be coming soon after.

It looks as if Activision, the publishers for the acclaimed and long running rival toy to game series Skylanders has been ready to make a Skylanders sequel announcement of their own as the publisher has sent out invitations for their own Skylanders press event. And with this it looks like we may be heading for a clash of the titans-esque bout for your kids’ attention span (and your wallets).

The latest video for Disney Infinity has confirmed that Marvel’s The Avengers will be making their debut soon. Though strangely, the new entry was built as “2.0 Edition”. It currently remains to be seen if Disney is looking to introduce a full blown sequel to their acclaimed series, or are just going to release a brand new bundle featuring Avengers figures & an Avengers toy box.  Either way would make sense from a business perspective. Considering that the first entry is still doing fairly well, Disney could just simply release updated content for the software rather than announce a full sequel, however with the Playstation 4 & Xbox One now out, it also makes sense to announce a sequel now more than ever, as it’s highly unlikely that Disney will port over the original game if they haven’t already.

Activision announcing another Skylanders sequel is more than likely, in fact I’d say it’d be 100% fact at this point. They’ve done a fairly good job at trying to stay in the fight with Disney Infinity with the deals made through McDonald’s & other promotions in an effort to bring new action figures to the Swap Force series, but it’s been more than ready to release the next entry. It’ll be interesting to see if Activision will try to re-introduce Spyro into the next entry or other Activision owned characters in an effort to compete with Disney’s major licensed characters that are surely to make their debuts in the sequel to their title.

At any rate, no matter who wins the battle between Disney & Activision this year, the one thing we’re all sure of is that parents (or more accurately their wallets) will be the main losers here. Expect more news on Disney Infinity 2 (or Avengers Edition), and the next Skylanders during E3 this June.
