In what continues to be a questionable return to form for theaters WarnerMedia & WB Pictures have announced that it’s halted DCEU film Wonder Woman 1984 the long-awaited sequel to 2017’s universally acclaimed Wonder Woman will finally debut in theaters with a limited month long release on HBO Max on December 25, 2020. This news comes after a number of delays due to the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. WB like many other studios took a “wait and see” approach as to what to do with currently produced films yet to be released. Many already expected the film to have been on the studio’s aforementioned in-house streaming service months back, but that was not to be as hope was still there for theaters to return to normalcy after a small down turn in covid cases before a second spike occurred.

In addition to the launch date, HBO Max will also exclusively stream the film in 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos upon it’s Christmas debut at not additional cost outside of the base subscription fee. This is a rather stark contrast to competitor Disney+’s “Premier Access” which charges an additional price for hosting new blockbusters initially planned for theaters including Mulan and a rumored April 21 launch for rival superhero film Marvel Studio’s Black Widow. Should it prove successful in gaining new subscribers which is likely this could be another permanent edge HBO Max has against competition with duel theatrical and HBO Max launches of their blockbuster films/ WarnerMedia recently confirmed a deal for HBO Max on Roku devices further increasing it’s odds for a healthy life in the streaming game. International viewers yet to have access to HBO Max will have the option to see the film in theaters beginning December 16, 2020.
