WB Pictures’ upcoming Batman shared universe is getting a much needed boost as plans for a sequel were made official. Announced at this year’s CinemaCon 2022, WB Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich revealed that the sequel for the hit reboot film is in development. Naturally, nothing about the plot or date was announced, however director Matt Reeves, as well as leads Robert Patterson & Zoe Kravitz were the first names confirmed to be returning for the title. Reeves came on stage and stated that more info would be coming at a later CinemaCon event.
In my review for the film I mentioned that my biggest worry was that it felt like there were no real concrete plans for the planned universe. With the sequel on the way those worries are slowly coming to an end. In addition to the sequel a film focused on Batgirl is set to premiere sometime this year exclusively on streaming service HBO Max. A spinoff series starring Collin Farrell’s Penguin is also in active development. A second spinoff focused on the GCPD was in the works but has since been cancelled being potentially replaced with a series focused on Arkham Asylum instead. The latter hasn’t been confirmed or announced but Reeves stated that he was on working ideas for the project.
