Ubisoft’s latest in the Tom Clancy franchise launches in a few weeks and I had the opportunity to play it ahead of launch. In the beta you create a player member of the Ghosts; an extremely skilled military team that’s been nearly taken out by one of their own named Cole D. Walker who has gone rogue. Your goal is to investigate the crash and deal with those responsible, in addition to leaving the island you crashed on.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a 2019 online shooter game, it is developed and published by Ubisoft. It will launch on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One on October 4, 2019. The beta is currently playable now until September 9, 2019.

Editor’s Note: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint beta codes were provided by Ubisoft in support of this preview.

Being released on Sept. 5th the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint beta has been out for nearly a full two days now, and it’s more than enough time to give my first impressions. I’ll have more to say over the course of the remaining three days as it’ll give us all a much clearer idea of what final product could potentially be like with its current state of play. In this beta players create a character version of lead Lieutenant Colonel Anthony “Nomad” Perryman. After surpassing the character creator screen we get a some cinematics and small tutorial section before we reach the game world hub which is a military base hidden within a cave. Here you find other players to create crews with and join them with online play. You can also rest and buy materials for crafting, weapons, and even vehicles if you’d like. It’s at this point I think I should give a heads up that both the beta and the full version of the game require an online connection to work regardless of whether or not you choose to play solo or with friends.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint promises a map equal to or slightly larger than predecessor Wildlands.

When you get into the previously mentioned tutorial you also unlock one of four classes with skill points. These classes can be interchanged over time and as you progress and level up your character you can use perks which give you an edge in battle. These perks range from travel to combat to stats. Due to the immensely large skill tree (which thankfully isn’t locked to a single class) you have a near unlimited amount of potential to create a Ghost that’s very likely to be unique to you and your chosen play style. This will help keep the game and player fresh as more content which requires different styles of play are released over time. It feels like Breakpoint wants the player to toy around with the options and never wanting them to play it safe to one style for far to long. The different level of enemy types has seemingly sought to this as well as there are indicators which reveal danger levels for the enemies and the same strategy or play style might not be as effective against one enemy vs another.

The Breakpoint player character screen which allows you to edit your load out for gear.

While travelling the world map you can find loot such as new weapons, ammunition, and clothing which acts as armor to better protect your player character. The clothing of course also doubles as cosmetics for you to dress your character with as you please. After you leave the hub world for the first time you get introduced to both main and side missions and are pretty much free to explore the island as you please, just be careful being in the air during certain areas cause drones. Missions gain players XP which in turn gains them skill points to use for their skill tree, more advanced perks naturally require more skill points, but even some of the earlier perks are incredibly useful such as the night vision mode, parachute, and other perks that will make things much easier for rookie players to experience their way to play.

So far so good for Breakpoint.

I’m enjoying myself with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint despite playing solo at the moment. I’m not sure what, if any changes Ubisoft will use to further showcase a representation of the full version, but if they’re coming I’ll definitely report back as our beta coverage continues. And I’m definitely looking forward to the remaining content within the beta before the end date.
