Volume Six is the beginning of the end of Kaneki’s nice guy personality, and the start of his far more crueler anti-hero side. Having been captured by Aogiri Tree and beaten by Yamori, Kaneki becomes a prisoner of the group, with his comrades at Anteiku unaware of what to do about his capture. After befriending fellow prisones Kaneki learns just how cruel his kidnappers are.
THE GOOD: Volume Six is an extremely action heavy volume. Being the final volume before Kaneki’s upcoming “transformation” the group at Anteiku enter a war with ghoul group Aogiri Tree. New key characters are introduced including the deadly Yamori (who’s the cause of Kaneki’s personality shift), Touka’s brother Ayato, Banjo, and others. The different struggles between Anteiku’s decision of what to do with Kaneki’s situation, and Kaneki dealing with his imprisonment provided some good depth on the two sides.
THE BAD: This arc is fairly dark arc due to it being the catalyst arc of Kaneki’s transformation.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Tokyo Ghoul Volume Six is one of the key volumes in the twelve volume series. Featuring an intense arc, and planting the seeds of Kaneki’s future it’s one of the best volumes in the series. Dark, action packed, and great story progression, Volume Six should be at the top of fan’s “favorites” list. Otaku Dome gives Tokyo Ghoul Volume Six an 89 out of 100.
