After experiencing a heavy surge of popularity in it’s home country of Japan, Tokyo Ghoul has made it’s way overseas to America on home release. The Tokyo Ghoul Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack comes with special features including DVD commentary from the voice actors of the dub, and others. Tokyo Ghoul tells the story of Ken Kaneki, an young college student, who ends up becoming a ghoul, a creature that must feast on flesh in order to survive. Tokyo Ghoul is an 2014 Seinen anime series, it is produced by Studio Pierrot, and licensed by Funimation Entertainment. It is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Tokyo Ghoul has been one of the new anime franchises to come out as of late, that I’ve absolutely come to love. The characters, world, and story intrigued me more than any other new anime I’ve seen last year. It impressed me so much that I began reading the manga and quickly caught up. With the North American release out, I naturally wanted to re-watch the series in English.
THE GOOD: If you’re a fan of action packed anime, that gets a little on the gory side, then Tokyo Ghoul is right up your alley. While the violence is a little laxed compared to the manga, when it occurs, it can be extremely violent and gory, if you’re into that type of thing. The back and forth focus on the humans and ghouls also gave the series a feeling of being more than an ultra violent action anime. Which is pleasantly misleading if you’ve only based your opinion on the series from the promos previously.
THE BAD: As previously stated, when the action occurs it can get crazy violent & gory, so if you can’t really stomach it then Tokyo Ghoul might not be for you.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Tokyo Ghoul is an fantastic action anime that has some great action scenes, but some fun lighter scenes as well. The focus on human and ghoul characters felt equal, and both races became an important part of the story and world. The violence could get super gory at times, so if you’re not a fan, then Tokyo Ghoul might be a tad hard to get into. Otaku Dome gives Tokyo Ghoul The Complete First Season an 88 out of 100.
