This week’s episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles focuses on April and just what exactly she is. We also finally learn her true origin and relationship to the Kraang as to why she’s so important to them.
Another Sunday passes with another great episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I have to say Season 2 has been a consistent ride from part one to part two, with last week’s fantastic episode “The Good, the Bad, and the Casey Jones”, “The Kraang Conspiracy” continues the great storytelling and actions scenes that the previous episode left us with. Of course Casey wasn’t featured in this week’s episode, which was a bit of a personal disappointment, but “The Kraang Conspiracy” definitely didn’t leave us hanging when it came to the introduction of a new character in journalist Jack Krutzen.
THE GOOD: First before I get to anything concrete about the episode, let me just say that I’m really enjoying the writers scripting in some more human characters who aren’t completely useless. First we had the Pulverizer (who unfortunately got mutated), then Casey, followed by Irma, and now journalist Jack Krutzen. It really shows that they’re trying to make New York more alive this season, when humans were almost non-existent as far as importance goes during season one. Here’s hoping these characters will have a permanent place of some kind in the series for the remaining seasons. Now it’s time to talk about the episode itself.
“The Kraang Conspiracy” featured some nice action, though not nearly as awesome as the action from last week’s episode, it was still fairly entertaining in that aspect. I particularly loved Raph using a Kraang bot as not only a human shield of sorts, but also using it’s own weapon against the other Kraang, that was fairly awesome. April taking on her clones was also a pretty cool action bit, along with Raphael, instead of Donnie (much to his dismay) coming to her aid beforehand. “I’ll go rescue April.”, “Oh man, I wanted to do that!”.
Going back to my earlier point of humans becoming more important in TMNT, this was an April O’Neil story, last week’s was the Casey Jones story. We learned just why April is so precious to the Kraang, and what her powers mean to her. Apparently, the Kraang is the whole “Ancient Astronauts” theory in a nutshell and have been visiting Earth for thousands of years attempting to terraform it for their own reasons. April’s mother had an involvement of some kind with the Kraang, during the time of her pregnancy with April and it cause her (April) to become 50% mutant, which is why she has this sort of communication ability with the Kraang. I’d also like to note that there was a funny, but awkward moment upon discovering that April was only half human, “Welcome to the family!”, *April looks on in shock and awe*.
THE BAD: The only real complaint I have about this week’s episode was the whole failed April clone ordeal, seemed like a lazy attempt at sticking a big baddie into this week’s episode. And there was no Casey Jones this week, which I thought sucked, personally. It’s long been believed that most of, if not quite a few of the TMNT episodes have aired out of production order, seems to be getting confirmed more as these episodes air one after another.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While a step down action wise compared to last week’s “The Good, the Bad, and the Casey Jones”, “The Kraang Conspiracy” provided some great storytelling, and we finally got the intel on April’s origins. Though short on it, this week’s episode did provide some really cool actions scenes, like Raph using a fallen Kraang bot for both attack and defense. Lack of Casey Jones and the April derp thing were really the only downers this week. Otaku Dome gives TMNT “The Kraang Conspiracy” an 84 out of 100.
