The girls who fight crime before bed time are back! Cartoon Network announced the surprising revival of The Powerpuff Girls after an extremely successful one off anniversary special. In the new rebooted series several of the changes are noticeable quite early, including the voice acting, which takes some getting used to if you’re a fan of the original series.
The Powerpuff Girls is an 2016 animated series and a reboot of the original 1998-2005 series of the same name. It is produced by Cartoon Network Studios, and premieres on April 4, 2016.
If you’re a fan of the original series, then odds are you’ll end up liking the reboot, citing of course your ability to keep an open mind throughout your viewing. Fans of the original will definitely be put off a tad by the new voice actresses and the modernized take of the series. but overall the reboot of The Powerpuff Girls retains the same magic the original series created by Craig McCraken had.
THE GOOD: The new Powerpuff Girls series has Cartoon Network’s currently preferred 15 minute run time instead of the normal 30 minute two half episode format, so you don’t have to get used to it with too much too fast. The modern changes, while noticeable don’t really effect the overall presence and spirit of the series, and because of this the new reboot episodes still feel very much like the original series.
THE BAD: So far there’s been no appearance from Professor Utonium, which is rather disappointing for a pilot. Utonium is a central character in the original series, and with the new settings and new characters being introduced, I’m hoping he won’t become an afterthought. The girls personalities have also had some added emphasis, such as Buttercup’s tomboyish lifestyle which feels unnecessary. It’s far more noticeable here than in the previous when it was clear but not in an “in your face” sort of way.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Fans of the original series will be able to appreciate the reboot if they can get over the modernization of the new series, and new voice actresses. The spirit of the original show remains barring a lack of Professor Utonium & some added, albeit unnecessary emphasis on the girls’ personalities. Otaku Dome gives The Powerpuff Girls pilot an 83 out of 100.
