The Legend of Zelda manga adaptations come home in new omnibus editions dubbed the “Legendary Editions”, packed with two stories from the manga a piece it provides fans of both The Legend of Zelda and manga with plenty of content to read in the comic retellings of the infamous Nintendo IP.
The Legend of Zelda is an 1999 manga series based on the Nintendo video game franchise of the same name, it is published & licensed by Viz Media, and is currently available in English.
As a major The Legend of Zelda fan growing up, I always try my best to grab as much Zelda media as possible, with the re-releases of the manga adaptions into omnibus collections, it feels far much easier (and cheaper) to do so than previously attempted. Spawning comic adaptions of iconic Zelda entries such as Ocarina of Time and many others, the manga franchise features our Hero link once agian going through many journeys throughout out time.
THE GOOD: Written by the manga author duo of Akira Himekawa, The Legend of Zelda manga holds as much a special place in the hearts of fans as the video game franchise that precedes it. While there are minor changes to certain story elements within the manga, the adaptions maintain the true spirit of the franchise in drawn and written form to rather surprising results.
THE BAD: The minor made-for-manga story changes will irk some fickle long-time fans, but it becomes an afterthought after coming to appreciate Akira Himekawa’s work.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The Legend of Zelda manga series is a well written ode to the storied video game franchise from Nintendo. Beautifully drawn, Akira Himekawa’s work is showcased strongly enough to deter even the biggest of critics for the comic portrayal of the iconic series. Otaku Dome gives The Legend of Zelda Legendary Edition Volumes 1 & 2 a combined score of 94 out of 100.
