In an interview to be released in this week’s Famitsu, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura confirmed that Square Enix is in serious discussion over the possibility of an HD console port for the acclaimed 3DS title; Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Though no real information has been given at this time, it isn’t too far fetched to think that 3D is on it’s way to consoles, previous titles exclusive to Nintendo platforms received ports, though due to development issues they weren’t playable.
However, there are some issues and questions pertaining to an Dream Drop Distance port, for one thing how would Square plan to distribute the title with the other titles in the series having been ported over in collection packs? While it’s possible that Square could re-release 358/2 & Re: Coded, this time in playable form alongside 3D, but it’s highly unlikely that this would be the case. Another issue is Square’s Kingdom Hearts publishing partner Disney.
Disney is apparently against their AAA titles being apart of digital distribution, this includes Kingdom Hearts. This is the very reason why the Kingdom Hearts PS2 titles haven’t been released to the Playstation Store via the PS2 Classic line, and also why Kingdom Hearts 1.5 isn’t available as a digital download. Therefore, Square Enix won’t be able to distribute the game digitally, which would be the easiest route to take. It’s likely Square would release 3D as Re: Dream Drop Distance, just as they did with Chain of Memories, which was originally released on Game Boy Advanced, then ported over to Playstation 2 and again on Playstation 3.
