The first two films in the Star Trek film reboot franchise has made the jump into 4KHD. Written by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, and directed by J.J. Abrams, the new Star Trek film trilogy stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as rivals turned friends Captain James T. Kirk and Spock (respectively).
Star Trek XI is the 2009 film reboot of the Star Trek film franchise, it is produced by Bad Robot Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Star Trek as well as it’s sequel Into the Darkness is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, digital and 4KHD.
Editor’s Note: Due to this being the first review of these films on this site, this review will be written as if this was an original viewing, review copies were provided by Paramount Pictures.
Having grown up in the early 90s with the boom of sci-fi mega hits like Star Wars and Star Trek just getting off the ground I unfortunately never got around to getting a proper viewing of either franchises. Now thanks to reboots and re-releases into newer, more available forms of media, this is no longer an issue for the new generation of Sci-Fi fans.
THE GOOD: Casting choices and written for both films were fantastically done. Pine and Quinto work well as the two film leads and their back and forth of butting heads mirrored the TV series quite well. The production quality and special effects are fun to see without being too much or distracting. Speaking solely on Into the Darkness, Cumberbatch as the lead antagonist Khan was especially great. Due to the heavy CGI and multiple colors, the 4K looked absolutely brilliant.
THE BAD: Despite Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance, I understand some fan controversy over Into the Darkness, for example the film’s design for Khan felt pretty uninspired.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Star Trek and Into the Darkness are fun films for new and old Star Trek fans alike. The sequel has it’s issues here and there, but Into the Darkness can still hold a candle to the first film in the new trilogy. Pine, Quinto, and Cumberbatch excel in their lead roles, and the 4K updates are gorgeous. Otaku Dome gives Star Trek 4KHD an 89 out of 100 and Star Trek Into the Darkness an 85 out 100.
