Fifty years after its inital debut on TV, Speed Racer returns to home media on DVD and Blu-Ray thanks to Funimation. Having years and years of syndication, a live-action adaption and reboot attempt, and an American comic remake of the Japanese manga, the original Speed Racer anime series can be brought home for fans of old and new.
Speed Racer is a 1967 shounen anime series, it is produced by Tatsunoko Productions and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD & Blu-Ray in English.
After multiple syndicated runs on multiple channels in America, the classic Speed Racer anime series is finally available on DVD and Blu-Ray in the country. Not only does the series make its Blu-Ray debut stateside, but the anime is also available in its entirety in a complete series set in English and original Japanese audio.
THE GOOD: If you’re a Speed Racer fan, then this Blu-Ray set may be the ultimate nostalgia package. Featuring dual audio between English & Japanese, all fifty-two episodes of the original anime series (unknown if the ’97 remake is coming in similar fashion) which includes the episodes not yet released to North American TV, and full 1080p on Blu-Ray it’s hard not to recommend this set for fans of all kinds. It should be noted that despite the Japanese audio, this is still very much the American version of the series, not the uncut Mach GoGoGo original Japanese version.
THE BAD: There’s zero special features, and I mean literally zero, which is odd as there seems to be a ton of space left on the last disc. Some fans may be a little annoyed at the lack of uncut content from the original Japanese version.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While the lack of special features is a little odd, everything else (minus no uncut original content of course). is nearly perfect in this classic returning Blu-Ray set. With every episode present, including some that never came to the US and dual audio, fans can definitely look past its very little flaws. Otaku Dome gives Speed Race Complete Series Blu-Ray a 90 out of 100.
