The next series from Cowboy Bebop series creator/director Shinichirō Watanabe comes in the form of new space opera conveniently titled Space Dandy. Titular hero Dandy travels the galaxy with robot pal QT and newcomer Meow collecting bounties for survival and babes.
Space Dandy is a 2014 Seinen anime series, it is produced by Studio Bones, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray in English.
Editor’s Note: A review copy of Space Dandy: The Complete Series was received from Funimation Entertainment.
After the worldwide phenomenon Cowboy Bebop left a whole in the hearts of anime fans, director Watanabe attempts to fill the void with recent work Space Dandy, and it mostly works. However at it’s core, Space Dandy is most certainly an original space epic worthy of praise in it’s own right.
THE GOOD: It’s another instant classic for Studio Bones, already acclaimed roster of anime series. Backed by Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo’s Shinichirō Watanabe, the series had a lot going for it from the jump, however with a charming animation style, and an even more charming cast (especially the English dub), it’s no wonder why this series became a surprise sleeper hit during it’s run on Toonami.
THE BAD: It’s over before you know it with a limited run of only 26 episodes between two seasons with no signs of a continuation in sight.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: You know a series is a gem when one of if not the only things wrong with it is the limited episode count. Space Dandy is a fun, adventurous space opera, with a more than tolerable dub track, great animation, and is a series worthy of praise. Otaku Dome gives Space Dandy: The Complete Series a 90 out of 100.
