Square Enix produced anime series Space Dandy has made its way to DVD & Blu-Ray. The cooky anime series by the mangaka of anime/manga classic Cowboy Bebop is back into the sci-fi with the frivolous series which made its debut on Adult Swim.
Space Dandy is an 2014 Shounen anime series, it is produced by Square Enix & Bones, and is licensed by Funimation. It is currently available through streaming and DVD & Blu-Ray.
When word got out that Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe was working on his next series, fans of his work was instantly looking forward to it. Space Dandy, while odd at first is an amazing take on the sci-fi genre, full of laughs and even some cool action scenes.
THE GOOD: Full of cooky, wild, frivolousness, Space Dandy comes off as a strange series compared to the super series and dramatic Cowboy Bebop, but once you invest your time into it, it’s one of the most incredible anime viewing experiences you’ll ever have. The characters, art, and overall direction are a thrill ride with each passing episode.
THE BAD: Fans of Cowboy Bebop will definitely have a tough time getting used to Space Dandy due to the mostly non-linear plot per episode. And they might not get the cooky spin compared to Bebop.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Space Dandy, while purposely silly, is a fun anime series that’s great for killing a few hours if you want something to binge really quickly. The animation and characters bring the world to life, but it may be challenging for Cowboy Bebop fans to get into to the series for the long run. Otaku Dome gives Space Dandy Season 1 an 85 out of 100.
