Space Dandy has finally arrived to the US and TV thanks to Cartoon Network’s Toonami on Adult Swim block, is the follow-up from the creators of Cowboy Bebop, Soul Eater, and Full Metal: Alchemist worth the hype and wait? Find out in our review below.
Eat laser, baby.
THE GOOD: From the opening to the first few scenes, Space Dandy oozes nods from one of it’s three predecessors in Cowboy Bebop. Once you see the opening mimic that of the aforementioned Anime you can already begin imagining what kind of ride you’re in for. The beautiful animation of Space Dandy is another thing that catches your attention. Bones really out did themselves with the colors and quality for this new series.
Space Dandy and robotic companion QT.
Space Dandy is definitely a nice addition to the Toonami line-up which was admittedly lacking in the original/new department. Another thing I didn’t really expect was Space Dandy being pretty damn funny. I don’t laugh at Anime very often or at all for that matter, but Space Dandy had some very whimsical jokes that brought many a laugh. I don’t know about Full Metal: Alchemist or Soul Eater, but the nods to Cowboy Bebop are so vivid that someone could unwittingly see Space Dandy as a complete ripoff, though that’s not really a bad thing.
Space Dandy in…space!
THE BAD: While funny, Space Dandy did have some boob jokes that were pretty annoying for the most part, thankfully though it knew when to pull them away for awhile. It would have been nice to get more info on Dandy’s antagonist, which we didn’t get to see very much of in this episode.
Meow and QT.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The premiere episode of Space Dandy was beautiful, funny, and fun to watch. Space Dandy is sure to be on some Anime fans “favorite characters list” as the series grows, but the boob jokes might be annoying to some who aren’t too keen on things like fan service. More info on Space Dandy’s enemies and why they’re after him would have been welcomed here as well. Overall, however Space Dandy brought laughs and enjoyment that’s rare for some Anime series these days, but with it being backed by some of the minds behind Cowboy Bebop, FMA, and Soul eater, could you really have expected any less? Otaku Dome gives “Live With the Flow, Baby” an 82 out of 100.
