SEGA has been a part of the gaming industry for over six decades. From its humble beginnings in the arcades to its massive and later diminished success as a console publisher and later being revitalized as a game publisher and developer conglomerate. The company has a rich library of legacy titles that at certain points in time found great fanfare before being put on ice in recent years. Longtime fans of the company often noted how they seemed a tad too dependent on “safe bet” franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Like a Dragon/Yakuza, Phantasy Star Online, and on the Atlus side series such as Persona. After a year or so of rumors surrounding the development of a modern take on the Jet Set Radio franchise which was described as a “super game” fans gained a bit more hope for the future of legacy SEGA content that had been sitting on the shelf for over two decades.

At the 2023 Game Awards, the publisher announced what appears to be a brand new initiative to review its classic titles for modern platforms under the name of “Power Surge.” The accompanying trailer not only showcased some bits of the reported Jet Set Radio revival but also several other legacy titles. In addition to Jet Set Radio new entries of Golden Axe, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, and Streets of Rage with gameplay footage attached were also revealed. with the promise of even more franchises coming.

SEGA has an immense library of titles between itself and the Atlus brand. While some of these will likely have some kind of live service bent many will take on a much more traditional and straightforward style of game. We weren’t shown much from the teaser, but what was provided was promising enough to get a little excited. No release date or window was provided, but SEGA has since stated that at least a handful of the titles from the lineup will be launching “within the next few years.” Further info such as platforms will be announced at a later time.
