Sankarea tells the story of a guy named Furuya who just so happens to have a zombie fetish falling in love with a girl named Rea; who becomes a zombie after having previously meeting one another as humans. Rea is in a bit of a mentally abusing relationship with her father, which she confides in with Furuya. The two begin to fall in love as the story progresses.
Sankarea: Undying Love is an 2012 romantic comedy Shonen anime. It is produced by Studio Deen, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on Blu-Ray/DVD combo and streaming services.
Sankarea: Undying Love is definitely one of the stranger anime series I’ve seen since I started watching religiously. The plot basically involes a young man named Furuya who has a zombie fetish. While he meets the first human girl he’s actually had feelings for, she ends up becoming his ideal crush anyways, and the two head for a wild and crazy ride full of love, drama, and the undead.
THE GOOD: One of Sankarea’s charming features is its crisp animation style. While the series was released roughly three years ago, the animation looks great compared to anime that’s currently premiering, so Studio Deen gets props for that. The story was a bit odd honestly, but then so are most plots in anime. The characters were likeable enough to keep you watching.
THE BAD: The plot alone won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but if you can power through it, then Sankarea: Undying Love is a fairly solid series.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Sankarea: Undying Love has one of the strangest plots out an already strange genre of animation, the charming animation style and likeable characters keeps you invested for the 12 (13 counting the OVA) episode run. Though, the plot may be a little over the top for some anime viewers, even by anime standards. Otaku Dome gives Sankarea: Undying Love an 78 out of 100.
