Square’s Final Fantasy series comes to Playstation 4 and PS Vita in a new cute chibi form in World of Final Fantasy. In the latest entry into the long-running franchise, you control main characters Lann and Reynn, two siblings who have the ability to control Mirages, creatures that inhabit their home world Grymoire.
World of Final Fantasy is an 2016 RPG, it is developed by Tose, and published by Square Enix. It is available on Playstation 4 and PS Vita.
While I haven’t had many if any hands on experiences with the core Final Fantasy franchise or its spinoffs (unless Kingdom Hearts counts?), I have always had a strange appreciation for it. Though I’ve never really played any entries in the core franchise, I am aware of the lore, world, and characters. In World of Final Fantasy more than a handful of these iconic characters are present in some form or another.
THE GOOD: World of Final Fantasy stars two new leads Lann and Reynn siblings with the ability to control creatures known as Mirages, these creatures take on many forms of characters and monsters throughout the Final Fantasy world, including characters such as Sephiroth, Cloud Strife, and others. The gameplay is traditional Final Fantasy turn-based action with RPG elements. There’s a rather large collection of Mirages which gives it a bit of a Pokemon x Final Fantasy vibe, which isn’t a bad thing at all.
THE BAD: The story is a tad silly, as is the overall presentation of the game, so a hardcore Final Fantasy fan looking for something serious may be turned off.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: World of Final Fantasy, while one of the lighter games in the series is still a solid precursor release before Final Fantasy XV. Though not as hardcore or serious of the latter in tone, World of Final Fantasy provides the classic turn-based gameplay of old and is pretty great in its own right if in small doses.
