Editor’s Note: Slight to near complete spoilers for World of Demons may be present within this review.
I’ve been following mobile gaming for as long as I can remember. From the humble days of Candy Crush to the impressive Infinity Blade and the genuine AAA experiences of today. World of Demons is a title that continues to change the perception of what a full fledged gaming experience on mobile could be. Sans the ridiculous microtransactions or in-app purchases.
THE GOOD: In World of Demons humans and Yokai co-exist with one another. That is until a demon lord named Shutei takes control of the yokai bending their wills to his liking. Four demon lords successfully killed Shutei and his head was buried. A servant samurai hiding from within the shadows kills the four lords and revives Shutei. The samurai betrays Shutei citing favor with the human race, but his past actions makes trust difficult to obtain. Now the samurai faces Shutei and his Yokai army to save humanity from Shutei’s clutches.
World of Demons features an unnamed samurai in search of redemption for humankind which he betrayed. The game has typical action combat, but also allows players to control Yokai for added support. In addition to Yokai you can also upgrade the samurai’s weaponry with two different currencies earned through gameplay. Another cool detail about World of Demon’s combat is depending on your finger work you can do different styles of attack with your weapon. For example, waiting in-between taps will lead to altering animations. Also it wouldn’t be a Platinum game without some kind of bullet time mechanic and I’m happy to report that World of Demons is no different.
THE BAD: If you don’t own a Switch or a game stream service like xCloud/Game Pass I think World of Demons is worth the $5 for Apple Arcade. It’s a great game but that’s almost a certainty with Platinum Games behind it. Though expectations should be kept in check as a mobile game is still a mobile game. You can finish it at about eleven hours of playtime.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: World of Demons is a cool experience for a mobile game. Definitely one of the better options out their if you wanted to give it a go outside of the ever growing gatcha space. Among another endless list of microtransaction filled mobile games out there. And for the price of $5 as well as the entire Apple Arcade library as a bonus it’s a pretty damn good deal.
