Wolfestein II receives it’s first batch of downloadable story content in “The Diaries of Agent Silent Death”. Focusing on the titular lead, Agent Silent Death returns to her work as an assassin to kill the three men directly responsible for the death of her husband.
Wolfenstein II: The Diaries of Agent Silent Death is a 2018 DLC pack for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, it is developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda. It is currently available on PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and soon Nintendo Switch.
Editor’s Note: An Xbox One review code of the Wolfenstein II : The New Colossus base game and season pass were provided by Bethesda in support of this review.
While I’m glad Bethesda is committed to expanding the story universe of Wolfenstein II and their other recent titles, “The Diaries of Agent Silent Death” seems like an idea that was toyed around with, but wasn’t really much substance to get behind a full on solo run for the character. Granted we still don’t have much to go on what else Bethesda has planned for Wolfenstein II’s remaining story content and it very well could be focused on Silent Death, but the closing moments of the episode pretty much collide with the start of Wolfenstein: The New Order which makes another solo run seem doubtful.
THE GOOD: At the very least Silent Death plays like a new character, she has new mechanics such as a one hit kill throwing knife, entering locked rooms, and a bullet time mode of sorts. While we get an introduction to Jessica Valiant aka Agent Silent Death in the pre-order DLC Episode Zero, she has her own solo run and backstory presented in ‘Diaries’. She’s on the hunt for three individuals directly responsible for not only the death of her husband, but possibly even the victory of the Nazi party during World War II.
THE BAD: Time is a factor and “The Diaries of Agent Silent Death” just doesn’t have it here. Most will be able to complete the expansion at or a little over 30-40 minutes, but It’s a good distraction that feeds your Wolfenstein II hunger, especially if PC and console owners plan on buying the Nintendo Switch version.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Wolfenstein II returns with a fresh piece of content and a new playable character. While the effort was commendable, the lack of time and information given to the titular lead has a heavy effect on the enjoyment of the content. Jessica Valiant having some new mechanics does provide a fun twist on Wolfenstein II’s gameplay however.
