For gamers who played the original Velocity on PSP, you’re in for a real treat. Not only is Velocity 2X an excellent game, but it’s also an excellent sequel to one of the best handheld titles to date. The classic gaming look of Velocity 2X is perhaps its greatest charm, but it also excels at playing as a modern game.
Velocity 2X is a 2014 shoot’ em up game, it is developed and published by FuturLab. It is available on Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita.
I never got around to playing the original Velocity during my PSP days, in fact I hadn’t even heard of the game until a friend told me about the sequel. After spending some time with Velocity 2X, I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t get to play this charming gem during the series’ initial release.
THE GOOD: Velocity 2X is an extremely charming looking game that takes it’s inspiration right out of a classic 80s-90s side-scroller. You play a Human woman who’s mission is to capture survives of space debris. As you progress through the game you will eventually gain new power ups as well as being able to travel on foot, which still feels like you’re playing the same game rather it’s in ship or on foot, which is good.
The OST was fun to listen too and teleporting at will is a hell of a lot of fun while in the ship. As a bit of a speed run gamer, I had quite a hard time getting a few survivors that required teleporting continuously. it really felt great knowing that you wouldn’t be stuck in ship gameplay from start to finish.
THE BAD: Some of the ship levels can be run through pretty quickly and can only take a few minutes to finish, especially the early missions. The story is also told through stills which is always a tad annoying, but a minor annoyance more than anything else.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Velocity 2X is another great indy game with some punch. A classic look with a modern feel, Velocity 2X is fun and charming, the story being told by still is is a down. However, mixing it up with on foot and ship gameplay makes up for it, though some ship levels can seem a bit too short.
