Warning: This review contains complete, to near complete spoilers for Until Dawn.
If you ever wanted what an campy horror video game title that’s actually enjoyable would look like, then Until Dawn is exactly what you’d get. Sex crazed, party animal teenagers? Check. An abandoned cabin in creepy woods on an dangerous mountain? Check. An killer on the lose? Check. Crazy twists, turns, and swerves? Check. All of these ingredients make Until Dawn, an super cheesy, super fun star studded experience.
THE GOOD: Until Dawn’s great cast helps bring together the script, and it often feels genuine, despite the heavy levels of cheese. Luckily the camp and realistic horror, helps take away from the feeling of this being an scripted MTV program. With multiple options, endings, and the ability to keep every single character alive, Until Dawn provides a lot of ways to play. And the choices felt like it had an legitimately severe effect on the game’s story. which is a godsend for these type of video games.
THE BAD: While the story is a pleasant surprise the second half was more of an “what the hell?”, than completely satisfying. And Dr. Allan Hill, one of the earlier highlights becomes a bit of an after thought. The quick time events would also often be super fast and hard to complete in time, thought this will mostly depend on the player. The Wendigos also felt completely random and somewhat out of place admittedly.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Until Dawn is exactly what it tries to be, an fun, campy, realistic horror experience. The game is fun mostly, but some parts felt off. Mainly the second half of the story and the Wendigo inclusion. Some of the quick time events were also extremely fast, sometimes feeling a tad hard to click in time, but this will mainly be an issue for one player over another rather than an experience for everyone. Until Dawn’s multiple endings and effective choice system also provided great replay value.
