The acclaimed “The Wolf Among Us” has returned to consoles and PC with episode 2 “Smoke and Mirror’s”, after the death of someone close to Bigby, gamers were treated with twist, shocks, awes, and returns. Does episode 2 keep the acclaim going?
The Wolf Among Us is an episodic point-and-click adventure game, it is developed and published by TellTale Games. It is available on PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.
Warning: Full to near complete spoilers for “Smoke and Mirrors” are posted in the review. If you have yet to play episode 2, then avoid this review until you have done so. You have been warmed folks.
The Wolf Among Us has returned and it br0ught a lot of shocks with the on-going storyline. Bigby had to deal with the death of Snow White while being interrogated by the police. Crane attempted to comfort him all while dealing with his own feelings over her death. Tweedledee managed to get captured and got his ass beat by Blue Beard, only to have Bigby and Crane intervene in the assault.
THE GOOD: The story (obviously) continues where episode one left off with the supposed death of Snow White. Bigby is interrogated by the police, and players have the option of having Bigby be angry, remorseful, or am asshole. I chose a mixture of angry and remorseful. Soon afterwards the police officer begins to bleed from her nose and gets knocked unconscious, this turns out to be Crane’s doing as he casts a memory wipe spell on the police officer interrogating Bigby and the other officers present during the time of interrogation. Soon afterwards, however things take an extremely dark turn from bad to worse.
Tweedledee gets interrogated by Blue Beard, and his ass beat in the progress. Bigby stops the beating and begins interrogating Dee himself. This is when things make the turn, as Snow White is revealed to be alive. I enjoy having the ability to turn Bigby into a violent psychopath or a tolerant softy. These choices that Telltale gives us with The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead are prime examples of how an actual human might choose to act when under pressure, or while dealing with their own personal demons.
THE BAD: There were some annoying freezing glitches for some reason while playing episode 2. Originally I thought it was merely due to me not having downloaded the latest update, but even after downloading it the freezing persisted. It was quite annoying and seriously got in the way of play time. I also didn’t like Crane getting revealed as the “Snow White Killer” so soon, I can only imagine (and hope) that the early reveal will lead to something bigger come season’s end.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The Wolf Among Us is a nice continuation of a fantastic story. The twist behind Snow White’s murder was an awesome turn of events. And the options over Bigby’s personality were great, however freezing glitches got in the way of story progression even with the update downloaded. I also wasn’t too fond of the early Crane reveal.
