As if you couldn’t feel even more sorry for little Clementine is being forced to grow up in, “A House Divided” puts those feelings into complete and total overdrive.
In “A House Divided” things go from zero to ten at a rather surprising rate, I was amazed at how quickly things were coming to a head. From the return of a major character, to unwarranted deaths, things pick up rather fast in the story, and Clementine’s choices and relationships with her acquaintances come to a serious clash within minutes of playing.
Warning: This review contains near complete spoilers for “A House Divided”. If you have yet to beat this episode, then please avoid reading this review until doing so you have been warned people.
THE GOOD: First how do I begin with the good? The level of choices Clementine has to make in “A House Divided” are getting horribly bad, like Lee Everett levels of bad. With each moment you play as this girl, it gets harder and harder to remember just that, the fact that she’s nothing but a little girl. She’s being forced to be an adult in a world that she didn’t fully understand not two or so years ago, and probably still doesn’t understand what’s right from what’s wrong now.
She not only has to struggle with her choices, but the new relationships she’s made as well as one (or perhaps even a few) that she’s made from her past. Major character Kenny from season one made his return in ” A House Divided”, revealing what may have been one of the most anticipated waits for a character’s fate in The Walking Dead’s history. Kenny has shown signs of obvious change from the loss of his first wife and child, despite all of this he managed to not only find a new love, but also a new group of friends that he can call family (two of which made an unfortunate end due to death).
A new villain showed his face in the name of Carver. He brings true fear in “A house Divided” the moment he calmly, but forcibly enters the house in which Clementine made her new friends. This new enemy not only affects Clem’s group. but also Kenny and his new family as well, even killing one of Kenny’s friends in cold blood depending on the choice the player makes. As episode two comes to an end Carver takes the remaining survivors of his onslaught hostage due to being the father of Rebbecca’s child.
THE BAD: Absolutely none.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: “A House Divided” brought a lot to the table from an action and emotional standpoint. It may be extremely difficult for episode three to top it in fact. Kenny’s fate finally being revealed after having been teased by TellTale was an excellent surprise to die hard fans of the game & franchise. Carver had a rather creepy introduction and it worked rather well to help establish what kind of sick person he truly is. I’d even say that Carver may be on a near par to The Governor in terms of sick, twisted individuals. If more of this is what’s to come from season two and beyond, then I say the more the merrier.
