Does 400 Days continue to raise the glory of TellTale’s The Walking Dead, or is it a good try gone bad?
The Walking Dead: 400 Days is a downloadable episode and interquel of Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead, a game published and developed by TellTale, based on the comic book and television series of the same name. It is available on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and PC via Steam.
THE GOOD: 400 Days kick off sometime after Season 1 and before the beginning of Season 2. You have the selection of 5 characters to choose from, once you complete each character’s story, the choices you’ve made effect the characters’ (now in a group) ultimate decision. Though it is currently unknown if these characters will return for Season 2 or another DLC episode. Not very much has changed between Season 1 and 400 Days in terms of gameplay. It’s still the same point and click game we’ve come to love, with some updated music and slightly updated graphics.
An uncalled for choice is featured in this story.
The choices in this episode are far more intense than in the previous ones. The story of the character Vince features a choice that you just don’t want to make. I felt so bad that I even tried replaying the scene in order to try avoiding it all together, but to no avail as the choice is 100% mandatory in order to move the story forward.
You’re unfortunately left not knowing the fate of some characters.
THE BAD: The time of completion per story was short, I’m thinking no more than about 5-10 minutes per character, equaling to about an hour of play time. Which is unfortunate, a number of questions are left unanswered only to be forgotten about until the next episode of the game or answered in an unsatisfying way during the final segment of the episode in some form. Some choices may be too much for some players, as they’re just flat out fucked up. I’d go into more detail, but can’t due to spoilers.
Cornfields and a zombie-filled apocalypse? This won’t end well.
THE UGLY: The game has a few hiccups like game freezes and the load time for the episode was a bit of a pain.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: 400 Days is exactly what Season 1 left us with, near perfection, but some things about the game were off. Some of the choices were outrageously hardcore, but seeing as how this is The Walking Dead it’s understandable. It unfortunately ends too quickly and there were some hiccups but the updated content is satisfying enough to dismiss them.
