Funcom’s latest Secret World spin off comes in the form of a psychological horror title about a troubled mother in search of her son at what seems like a haunted, closed down theme park. Using mental jump scares as Lorraine travels through the dark and twisted amusement park attempting to find her son Callum, you learn the shocking truth behind him going missing, and the status of Lorraine’s mental state.
The Park is an 2015 horror spin off of MMO The Secret World, it is developed and published by Funcom. It is available on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
The psychological spin off of The Secret World; The Park is an interesting experiment Funcom chose to go for. While only a total run time of two hours long (if you do everything in the game, a lot of which is optional), you traverse an amusement theme park as a mother looking for her young son. The Park’s random scares work pretty well and are nicely paced throughout the adventure.
THE GOOD: The Park is scary when it wants to be, though limited due to timing and pacing, when the scares come they can hit pretty hard. Throughout it’s two hour run we learn the truth about Lorraine and her mental state, and what has really happened to Callum. The ending sets up a fairly surprising finale that some may not see coming until the later half of the game.
THE BAD: The game is short and really only meant to kill some free time, but it works well that way.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While nothing more than a game meant for killing time (at night), The Park is one of the best time killing experiences you could ever have. Well paced scares and a solid horror atmosphere makes this title one of the best horror games out right now.
