A new competitor has entered the Battle Royale genre ring in Strange Brigade, out now on PC & console. Developed by Rebellion this new title has players tackling the mythological with beasts and creatures of all shapes and sizes in a 1930s set world.
Strange Brigade is a 2018 Battle Royal game, it is developed and published by Rebellion. It is currently available on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
Editor’s Note: A review copy of Strange Brigade was provided by Rebellion in support of this review.
Taking place in 1930 with a mythological setting; Strange Brigade has you playing as an archaeologist named Edgar Hardin. After finding the tomb of an ancient queen named, he releases her spirit from its tomb and the Strange Brigade engage to aide Edgar in defeating the evil queen and send her back to her grave.
THE GOOD: In an industry full of titles within its genre, Strange Brigade does have a handful of things going for it. For one thing there’s an actual story attached to it as well as a playable story mode. The characters are likable and seem useful enough. Gameplay is pretty standard battle royale affair, but there are some modes that are actually quite fun such as Score Attack. Character customization is here also if you’re into that sort of thing and you can unlock weapons during gameplay for more powerful load outs. As you progress further within a level more of the map opens up for extra exploration & more powerful weapons, and some of the creature designs are cool to look at.
THE BAD: Strange Brigade’s biggest issue isn’t that it’s necessarily a bad game, it’s the fact that it’s here in an already crowded genre. That makes it incredibly difficult for the game to feel like it stands out on it’s own. I can’t help but feel like Strange Brigade would have been viewed at much better had it come out around the time the battle royale craze was first kicking off. This of course isn’t Strange Brigade’s fault it’s just an unfortunate scenario.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: If you’ve only gotten a mere taste of battle royale titles by playing one or two such PUBG or Fortnite, definitely give Strange Brigade a try. However, if you’ve experienced more than a handful of the craze then it may feel a little “been there”. Still on a sale or even renting it for a few weeks I think Strange Brigade is well worth the money spent compared to the rest of the smaller competition.
