Once dubbed the “greatest fighting game of all time”, Soul Calibur II returns this time on current gen platforms and in High Definition, but does it still hold up after 11 years?
Soul Calibur II HD Online is an HD remake of the original 2002 fighting game. It is available on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 via Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, respectively.
THE GOOD: Soul Calibur II HD Online is the same gaming experience it was 11 years, absolutely perfect. The improved visuals and crisp gameplay makes it a challenge against fighting game veterans, but it’s not too hard, at least not to the point where it can’t be picked up and played by anyone. And the previously console specific characters being playable in both versions of the game is a major plus.
Ivy and Maxi tearing it up in…a library?
Online play was fun so was ranking up against people all over the world. The simple, yet awesome story mode also makes its’ return in beautiful High-Def. The classic Arcade mode was great to see back, but it felt a little laxed.
Finally, Spawn and Heihachi are in the same game.
THE BAD: Although the original experience being back is great, the lack of new modes was a little upsetting.
Spawn being bad ass.
THE UGLY: No Wii U version unfortunately meant no HD Link.
Maxi is getting ready for battle.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Soul Calibur II HD Online is the same great game we loved 11 years ago, but that’s where some of the problems lie. No new modes is bit disappointing, but Heihachi and Spawn being playable in both versions is great. However no Link or Wii U version is very upsetting.
