Skylanders returns with the latest entry; Skylanders Superchargers. While previous titles involved multiple toy to life characters, this year’s game has introduced vehicles for the first time in it’s history. Once again providing backwards compatibility to the previous game Trap Team, Superchargers brings a ton of characters to gamers looking to get their hands on it.
Skylanders Superchargers is an 2015 toy-to-life action-adventure game, it is developed by Beenox & Vicarious Visions, it is published by Activision. Skylanders Superchargers is available on mobile, console, and handheld gaming devices.
Editor’s Note: This Playstation 4 review copy of Skylanders Superchargers was provided by Activision.
After spinning off from much beloved Activision franchise Spyro, Skylanders has really come into it’s own little world. From the introduction of Chaos (voiced by Invader Zim’s Richard Steven Horvitz), to the ability to trap villains, and now vehicles, Skylanders has really come into it’s own, with the main story characters finally stepping out of Spyro’s shadow some two or three installments ago.
THE GOOD: Once again players are put into the role of the Skylander, an elemental hero who must stop Chaos and save Sky World from his brand of destruction. This time around players are also able to get a turn with vehicles to add extra power to their Skylanders. Vehicle gameplay never felt like it was just there, it seemed to really add something extra to the gameplay. Controls for the vehicles weren’t difficult which was an added bonus. And the voice acting is still top notch.
THE BAD: Gameplay still feels limited due to some areas being locked to certain elements.
OVERALL THOUGHTS; Though limited due to the elemental lock, Skylanders Superchargers is still an excellent game. The introduction of vehicles brings a new dynamic to gameplay, and the openish world is still fun. The voice acting is once again hard to beat, and the backwards compatibility with Trap Team figures still brings out the best of the latest Skylanders installment.
