Pac-Man is back and ready to chow down on some ghosts in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2. This open-world Pac-Man game set in the same universe of the Disney XD cartoon has some fun platforming, but don’t expect a classic experience similar to the original game, as it’s aimed at a younger audience.
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 is an 2014 action platforming game, it is developed by Monkey Bar Games and published by Bandai Namco Games. It is available on PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS.
Pac-Man is a classic video game that has been interpreted into a new genre multiple times including a couple of cartoons on TV. In Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2, the efforts are aimed at an (sort of) open-world platforming game. It actually works well for a platforming game, but the kid-friendly gameplay may make it hard for much joy to be had.
THE GOOD: Ghostly Adventures 2 is fun as a platformer, mixed in with elements from the Pac-Man series in an open-world setting works surprisingly well. There’s the basic running and jumping, but you can also use Pac-Man’s signature chomp to move across levels, which is actually pretty fun to do and see. Pac-Man also gains power-ups through special fruit collected throughout the game.
THE BAD: For those looking for a rejuvenated feel of the 80s classic, then look elsewhere. This is an re-imagined title based on the Disney XD cartoon of the same name. The kid friendly difficulty also has a lack of challenge for serious gamers who are remotely interested in it.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Good but not great, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 has a lot of potential to be a seriously great re-imagined Pac-Man game, however the aim at children really holds back what it be. The lack of difficulty makes finding a real challenge with the game hard. Those who are fans of the original classic, but decide to pick this one up may be a little uninspired to play for more than an hour or so.
