Horror hits consoles again with the Playstation 4 release of Outlast. Does it really bring the scares?
Outlast is a 2013 survival-horror game, it is developed and published by Red Barrels. It is available on PC and Playstation 4.
I’m not much of a fan of Survival horror games, in fact the only games I recall liking are Resident Evil, Dead Island, and Alan Wake if that counts. However, Outlast brought something that those other games weren’t able to bring; real, legitimate fear. Honestly when you first pop in Outlast everything about it is creepy as hell, especially the little warning Red Barrels gives you. Then we get to the psychiatric ward, and all hell breaks lose. Seriously, the minute you enter the ward you’re in for a hell of a ride.
THE GOOD: The fear from Outlast is 100% real, it got to the point where I had to get away from playing for long periods of times. It also didn’t help that I was playing on an HDTV and could hear pretty much everything that was happening in the game. The ability to hide from enemies in just about any way possible was pretty neat. From going into a locker, to hiding under a bed. The options for getting away from enemies was awesome.
THE BAD: Enemy AI wasn’t the best in the world, in fact sometimes when running from the enemy, you could literally see them just standing there, Even if you braved the option of walking towards them, it kind of took the scare & fun out of it.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The atmosphere of Outlast frightful and nerve wrecking. That’s the thing that makes Outlast unique compared to past survival horror games. The different ways to hide from enemies were awesome, however enemy AI would some times leave a lotto be desired. Still if you’re in the mod of getting the shit scared out of you for a good time, then Outlast is definitely for you.
