Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates return in a new Musou title. Unlike the previous title which followed an original storyline, Pirate Warriors 3 is about 97% canon, with one of the chapters being dubbed as an “original game story”. Taking place from the very first One Piece arc all the way to the time skip and the Punk Hazard arc, Luffy and the Straw Hats face literally thousands of pirates in decently sized maps.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is an 2015 Musou action game, it is developed by Omega Force and published by Bandai Namco Games. It is available exclusively for Playstation consoles and PC.
While not an particular fan of Dynasty Warriors, I’ve always loved Omega Force giving their take of anime IP with Musou. It always felt like you were actually apart of an anime episode, during one of those shounen scenes were multiple enemies appeared on-screen at once. And it’s always fun being able to take down dozens of them with merely an attack or two.
THE GOOD: Even if you’re not a fan of One Piece, but enjoy Musou games, then you’ll likely enjoy Pirate Warriors 3 merely because of its genre and vice versa. Despite the Musou/One Piece fandom coming into play, Pirate Warriors 3 is generally an entertaining game due to the amount of content and hours put into it. The canon story mode provides a ton of gameplay, and you level your characters up as the story progresses and increase their skills using coins. Dream Log mode gives players an opportunity to further increase their hours logged by unlocking extra characters and giving them the chance to further increase their skills.
THE BAD: There’s not much wrong with Pirate Warriors 3 other than most likely seeing it as another Musou. You’ll either enjoy it for being a One Piece game, enjoy it for being a Musou, or won’t enjoy it for either reasons.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is a fine One Piece game, and an even finer Musou game. With tones of content to play with and two modes to log plenty of hours into, Pirate Warriors 3 will please any Musou or One Piece die hard. Covering a huge amount of arcs from the anime, fans will be delighted to see their favorite characters taking down multiple pirates until their heart’s content.
