The sequel to Mugen Souls has made it’s way to America. Bringing with it what fans of the original loved, but how is it in comparison?
Mugen Souls Z is a 2014 RPG video game. It is developed by Compile Heart and published by NIS America. It is available exclusively on the Playstation 3.
I’ve never personally played any of Compile Hearts’ titles, though that’s likely due to the fact that I’m not much of an RPG fan in general. In order for me to show interest, gameplay and plot have to be the main selling points. Mugen Souls Z, while great for those looking for a story, doesn’t have much to show in the gameplay department.
THEĀ GOOD: As previously mentioned for those looking for a story, then Mugen Souls Z is definitely going to be for you. Gameplay ranged from the use of minigames (if you can call it that) and giant mech battles. The good thing about the mech battles was that it took some actual strategy to get a win over your opponents. So you could never use just one move to over power them and win the fight like it was nothing.
THE BAD: There’s too much damn talking, that’s perhaps the most annoying thing about Mugen Souls Z more than anything else. Luckily enough, you can fast forward through all of the cut scenes within the press of a button. However you run the obvious risk of missing the plot entirely. Though I doubt most people would want to read through or hear all of the story anyways. That’s another thing I’d like to discuss, the fact that the cut scenes are practically image stills with voice overs. I’ve never been a fan of this myself, and it’s pretty overwhelming to see the same image with different text for over five minutes if you choose to fast forward through it all.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Mugen Souls Z is a bit of an odd one, lax on gameplay but heavy on story. And there there’s the use of still images for cut scenes and an extremely long story a that. Still, if you’re a fan of the previous game or any of Compile Hearts’ previous titles, then you’ll likely find some enjoyment with the game.
