The spiritual successor to Gabriel Knight has been released to the gaming populous. Is it as good or better than it’s predecessor?
Moebius: Empire Rising is a 2014 point and click adventure game, it is developed by Pinkerton Road and is published by Phoenix Online Publishing. It is available on Windows PC and Linux, and will soon be available on IOS & Android.
Point and Click adventure games are starting to make a rising comeback, thanks mostly in part to TellTale’s The Walking Dead, and Double Fine’s Broken Age. These games have helped revitalize an once thought to be dead genre. And with crowdfunding success stories from programs such as Kick Starter and IndieGo the possibility for the point and click adventure is endless. In comes, Moebius: Empire Rising, another successful Kick Starter title, as well as another entry into the point and click genre. In Moebius you play Malachi Rector, an antiques dealer that must solve a mystery surrounding an amount of linear events that also involves his future.
THE GOOD: One of the good things about Moebius is that it’s visuals are absolute fantastic for the budget it had. If you’re a total point and click junky, then chances are you’re going to really enjoy Moebius. There’s some difficulty in there as well, as you have to read the person or people you’re conversion with correctly in order to progress in the story. This is done by matching their emotions and actions to how their eyes and hands react, or what they have on their person.
THE BAD: Sometimes reading the person your in conversation with will get a little too difficulty. And there’s not much to do exploration wise, for the most part there’s nothing but the linear story, which kind of makes things a bit boring and the exploration of the room you’re in isn’t as expansive as that seen in The Walking Dead and Broken Age.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Moebius’ addition will help expand interest in point and click games, it’s held back by a lot mainly due to budget, which isn’t really the developer’s fault. The graphics are beautiful, and gameplay can be fun and interesting, but the difficulty and lake of expansion when playing can often get in the way of the fun.
