Sony has taken it’s Spider-Man rights to video games in the appropriately titled Marvel’s Spider-Man. Following a much more seasoned Peter Parker as Spider-Man in a standalone adaptation of the source, the Insomniac developed title provides players with the closest video game adaptation of the web slinger we’ve gotten since Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is a 2018 action, superhero game, it is developed by Insomnia Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is available exclusively for the Playstation 4.

Editor’s Note: This review contains near complete to complete spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man.

DC’s Arkham series has finally found it’s Marvel rival in Spider-Man.

While Marvel’s Spider-Man doesn’t make use of the franchise’s entire rogue gallery, the choice amount of villains that are used are a very respectable mix of new, obscure, and fan-favorites. For example, as many have probably noticed Mr. Negative; a fairly new member of Spidey’s rogue gallery has a big role to play in the game’s story. Even if you don’t feel the game’s story, the amount of content and sheer joy you get from controlling Spider-Man while performing in combat or taking on side quests is enough to have many wanting to play until 100% completion has been reached.

Play as a seasoned Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man.

THE GOOD: If the first thing you’ve noticed about Marvel’s Spider-Man is that it’s combat is an awful lot like the WB Batman; Arkham series, the you’re right. However, Spider-Man’s combat goes much deeper than that. While the former focused on Batman using martial arts & gadgets to rid himself of enemies, Spidey does so in similar fashion, but his combat is much more acrobatic based than martial arts based. This falls in line with Spider-Man’s natural agility & agile movements. As you level up Spider-Man by gaining experience doing various tasks such as story missions & side quests you can unlock more techniques & gadgets to utilize for combat, though it should be noted that some of these are tied to the story.

Become more powerful & use improved strategies by leveling up.

As you traverse the map of Marvel’s Spider-Man random crimes such as robberies & carjackings will generate for you to stop. While it seems like these are just there for busy work, in actuality they’re tied to overall game progression and each part of the city has a certain number of these crimes that need to be completed to make that area safer for the people of New York. If and when you eventually get tired of the story you can do the aforementioned side quests that’ll have you finding clues to the whereabouts of Black Cat’s stash, finding bombs hidden by Taskmaster, or cleaning up the Oscorp pollution spread in the New York air for Harry.

The virtual streets of New York is chock full of life & things to do.

Eventually as you do more side quests you earn enough tokens to unlock multiple suits in the game. The tokens are basically free in-game currency and all you have to do to get them is just complete quests within the game such as challenge & crime missions. The story gets pretty engaging as it goes on, though admittedly it can be a bit predictable in certain areas. The voice acting is performed pretty solidly throughout the game’s run, the soundtrack is beautiful, and the use of Spider-Man’s character roster is fantastic.

While not necessarily weak, Marvel’s Spider-Man’s story is a bit slow going in.

THE BAD: The story takes a while to get good, but it’s much better than earlier reviews suggested. There are some game breaking bugs present, but they’re rare. The forced stealth missions slow things down a bit.

Yes, that’s the Avengers’ Tower you’re seeing right now.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Marvel’s Spider-Man certainly isn’t perfect, however it does live up to the expected quality as not only a Playstation Exclusive but a modern age superhero video game and really that’s more than enough for the first entry in what’s most definitely a new Playstation franchise. Spider-Man has been given justice as a video game adaptation for the first time in a long time and whenever the sequel releases I’m looking forward to see how far beyond Sony & Insomniac go to make it 100% perfect.
