Square Enix has brought teenage drama in the form of video games to PC and consoles. With the recent come back of point and click adventure games, it was only a matter of time before a big publisher tried their hands at it, but how does Life is Strange stack up to The Walking Dead and other point and click titles?
Life is Strange is an 2015 point and click, episodic adventure game. It is developed by DontNod Entertainment, and published by Square Enix. It is available on PC and consoles.
When one initially looks at Square Enix’s new point and click title Life is Strange, the tone and nature of the game makes it feel like you’re playing a new MTV scripted series. However, as Episode 1 goes on, you’ll find yourself in a dark and deep story with a supernatural twist.
THE GOOD: Life is Strange seems like an predictable teenage loner story, this is mainly due to its charming animation style and the core characters, but don’t let it’s cel-shaded charm fool you. Things get amazingly dark, fast, from gun violence to hints of rape and even murder all of these are present before you even come close to finishing the first episode in the series. Max’s ability to rewind time became extremely helpful throughout the episode, and often times the consequences for your actions would be clear.
THE BAD: The start and slow pace can kind of get in the way of progressing, and what you needed to do in order to move on would take a serious amount of time to figure out.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Life is Strange may seem like an game aiming to be a teenage drama, it proves to be much more. The character development and story is engaging enough to want to continue forward, but some of the progressive story actions needed to be more direct.
