The sequel to surprise hit Injustice: Gods Among Us is out now on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and mobile devices. Taking place after the events of the alternate Earth where Superman went mad, Injustice 2 follows a divided Justice League dealing with the choices made in the previous game, while some have been able to live peaceful lives (to a degree) others haven’t been able to let go of the horrors from Superman’s reign.
Injustice 2 is a 2017 fighting game, it is developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is currently available on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
In 2013, WBIE released Injustice: God Among Us, a fighting game taking place within the DC universe with gameplay inspired by Mortal Kombat’s most recent efforts at the time. Obviously a MK-esque DC fighting game sounded strange, but it ended up working due to its uncanny natural feel of DC characters with Mortal Kombat gameplay mix, the story was also one of the best written & enjoyable stories in DC history. With the sequel released it expands upon everything that made Injustice: Gods Among Us so great ten fold.
THE GOOD: If you played and enjoyed the original Injustice, then you’re going to absolutely love Injustice 2. While ‘Gods Among Us’ received a moderate reception which eventually grew over the years, Injustice 2 is a near perfect fighter that approves upon its predecessor in every way imaginable. Featuring a huge roster which will be further expanded with DLC, Injustice 2 will make it hard for you to not find at least one of your favorite DC characters present to play around with. Core combat has been modified to a degree for both experienced and beginner players, and honestly it feels like Injustice 2 would be a better entry point into the series in comparison to ‘Gods Among Us’.
The story of Injustice 2 is by far the most enjoyable cinematic experience for a fighting game to date. With some of the greatest voice acting & facial animations, as well as a few optional choices that effect the story in both small and major degrees, the only disappoint you’ll find is that it’s pretty short having been completed in a few hours, even with the optional material completed in full. Despite its run time, Injustice 2’s story still manages to have almost if not every character present in some or fashion. Admittedly, Joker’s appearance kind of felt like nothing more than fanservice.
Taking out a play from the DC Comics own playbook, Injustice 2 introduces a multiverse system. It acts sort of like the towers from Mortal Kombat, with events lasting from minutes, to hours, to days, and so on as players partake in new themed missions featuring modifiers such as health drops and partners for extra XP & gear gaining. Speaking of which the gear system, while initially unattractive actually works fairly well. As you play the game (regardless of mode) you drop either gear, mother boxes, color shaders, or in game currency to further expand your collection to customize your main fighters.
THE BAD: Microtransactions are an annoying sight. The story mode run time is pretty upsetting too due to it being so good you can’t help but want more. Deadshot is also very cheap during online play.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Injustice is back and better than ever. Perhaps the greatest fighter of its generation, Injustice 2’s gameplay, story, voice action, and incredible features make for a hard effort to top in the third installment.
