Playstation exclusive Horizon Zero: Dawn is Sony’s latest triple a title for the Playstation 4. In the game players control Aloy, a young woman looking to discover her past as well as change the view of herself from the people around, as she is deemed an outcast. While Horizon’s strongest suit is its story, it does kind of feel “been there, done that” elsewhere.
Horizon: Zero Dawn is an 2017 action RPG game, it is developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, it is available exclusively on Playstation 4.
In a world of machines and a mix prehistoric, modern, and futuristic weaponry, Horizon: Zero Dawn offers players a number of different options to play. The skill tree & growth mechanics of the game increases player character Aloy’s stats to have her stand up to even the toughest of human or robotic enemies. Players will also come across side quests and crafting to increase their inventory and ammo cache, as well as upgrade their weaponry.
THE GOOD: Horizon: Zero Dawn features a likable protagonist in outcast Aloy, set in a futuristic, yet primitive post-apocalyptic world. Using a large collection of weapons, players will face both metal and man as they traverse game’s dangerous map. As your travels continue within the universe, the difficulty travels alongside you, thankfully the skill tree and crafting mechanics feel like co-op pals to aide you in the journey. The story is where Horizon: Zero Dawn shines, full of emotion, depth, and an extremely enjoyable cast of characters, you’ll find yourself immersed in Aloy’s tales of hardship.
THE BAD: Gameplay can sometimes reach familiar territory, even more so with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being released around the same time.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Horizon: Zero Dawn can often feel like we’ve experienced what it’s offering from gameplay before, the other elements such as story, writing, and world offer much more depth and a sense of a unique game. Aloy and the rest of the cast are well designed and likable, but I can’t help but think there could have been a little more to give gameplay wise.
