Funko gets in on the crossover craze by bringing its pop toys to video games in Funko Fusion. Packed with tons of characters from just as many licensed properties you can choose one of several of your favorites to explore a world bringing these universes together. The game takes a lot of inspiration from LEGO & toys-to-life video games while featuring combat and some exploration.

Funko

Funko Fusion brings several IPs into an action-brawler world.

The Funko company is giving fans a new way to collect their popular cartoony-like chibi toys with the release of the video game Funko Fusion. With tons of characters from many universes to gather and interact with in-game fans of pop culture and entertainment are sure to find more than a few things to love about the game. Featuring 26 worlds represented at launch and more on the way with DLC, Funko Fusion hopes to bring joy to players of all kinds.

Unlock new characters in-game or through Funko Pop codes, which are included with real-life toys.

THE GOOD: Funko Fusion starts by giving you a few options to begin your playthrough with characters featured in universes such as Scott Pilgrim, Hot Fuzz, and Jurassic World. The initial roster of starting characters is pretty sizable which is about fifteenish or so between the available franchises at the start of the game. What I’m willing to call a launch campaign is focused on seven worlds based on major franchises and has an overall connecting plot of sorts. You can play these worlds in any real order, but it doesn’t have any real changes or effects on the story in regards to the order you choose.

Each world has five stages and four characters to switch from between them. Funko Fusion will at times encourage players to switch these characters often as they have unique abilities to aid them. I’m not too familiar with Funko lore myself, but I was able to find that apparently, the two main characters of the story Funko Freddy and Evil Eddy are Funko originals. Makes sense to base a video game plot on them being the case. There are genuine moments of brilliance in the campaign when it gets creative in its approach to broaden the player experience like when it uses certain gimmicks unique to certain worlds.

There are several Easter Eggs to be found throughout to keep you fan-crazed. You can unlock new characters, outfits, and I’ll assume at some point worlds through special promotions such as the KFC promotion, DLC, and just general Funko Pop purchases which will now be packed with Funko codes to be redeemed on the Funko Fusion website. Some characters can be unlocked in-game such as Mega Man.

You can switch characters at will if you find a Funko pop box.

THE BAD: The game suffers from glitches such as freezing and being stuck. The gameplay may get a bit repetitive for some at times. Admittedly a lot of the enjoyment comes from which of your favorite characters you’re enjoying the play of the most which can get dull. Additionally, the story campaign isn’t something to expect too much from, but I’d give additional campaigns from DLC (if they exist) a chance before making any real final judgment. Gameplay for quests is often limited to fetch quests in a lot of cases and it gets old fast. Sometimes, the presentation can be the game’s worst enemy with no voice acting or real facial expressions due to the design of the toys in question.

Exploration is encouraged throughout the playthrough.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Funko Fusion has some good building blocks for the foundation of a potential game series surrounding the IP. With the number of IPs featured, there’s no reason the initial Funko Fusion release can’t be a hub for continued game content updates and even new gameplay elements such as racing and shooting worlds. There are solid bones for Funko Fusion which is held back by playing it safe far too much even by the standards of a family-friendly game.
