The fifth core installment into the Far Cry franchise is out now on PC and console. This time taking place where Montana is starting to become overrun by a religious cult, you play as an unnamed Junior Deputy tasked with taking in the cult leader; charismatic Joseph Seed, naturally however things don’t go as planned.

Far Cry 5 is a 2018 action-adventure FPS, it is developed and published by Ubisoft. It is currently available on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

Following 2014’s release of Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5 is the first core entry into the Far Cry franchise in over four years. With a completely customizable lead character taking charge players will be battling dozens of cultist, violent animals, and the villainous Seed family in an effort to free your companions and liberate Hope County, Montana.

THE GOOD: The fifth core installment into Far Cry continues the crazy and zany world of destruction and violence the franchise is known for. Unlike previous games which had a linear lead character in Far Cry 5 you can completely customize your character from skin color to gender. You play as a Deputy who’s been called in to assist in the defeat of the Seed family who’s almost completely taken over Hope County. There are a total of three regions to liberate each of which controlled by a member of the Seeds. As you progress throughout the story you unlock companion characters who can aide you in missions. These range from snipers to air cover and even animals including Boomer the dog, Peaches the lion, and Cheeseburger the bear.

Like with most Ubisoft games of recent memory, Far Cry 5 features an open-world with tons of content within the main campaign and side missions. As previously mentioned, there are missions to unlock new companions to aide you during story or side quests.  However, you can also go fishing (there’s even a mission to catch a legendary fish), free captives of Eden, and there’s even an arcade mode which you can also contribute to by creating levels for the online community. Outside of the endings (in my personal opinion anyways) the story was mostly solid. The characters were great and voice actor/actress performances were believable, especially as far as the Seeds go. Another thing I wanted to point out about the story, people seemed to mistakenly believe that this was some sort of message in regards to Donald Trump and the 2016 Presidential election when it wasn’t even remotely close to such a thing. While it’s not necessarily my place to call out anyone on how they review or critique a game, Far Cry 5 not being some try hard, over the top “political message” definitely isn’t a reason to review it accordingly. And for what it’s worth no I’m not a Trump supporter or Republican, or whatever, I just found some reviews pointing this out in their reviews as ridiculous and unnecessary.

THE BAD: As previously mentioned the story while solid does have it’s flaws, particularly for me the endings. I’m not saying every good story has to have a hero winning in the end, but regardless of which ending you choose between the “good”, bad, and secret they all just come off as completely depressing for an end game to a story like this.

Far Cry 5 is a mostly satisfying beginning, middle, and end.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Far Cry 5 is a well built action game with tons of adventure, exploration, and places to liberate around Hope County. The key characters are fun, the Seeds are fantastic villains, and the gameplay while standard Far Cry affair is still good enough to keep you invested into the end game moments, post game, and DLC.
