Don’t Starve finally gets it’s next-gen port, but does it stack up to its PC predecessor?
Don’t Starve is a 2013/2014 action/adventure, survival horror game, it is published and developed by Klei Entertainment. It is available for PC and Playstation 4.
While Don’t Starve looks like it was made for “point and click” on the surface, I thought it was done surprisingly well on Playstation 4. The item menu took some initial getting used to, but once you get the hang of things it’s really quite simplistic. Using the shoulder buttons as a bit of a substitute for the keyboard controls was a rather clever way of doing things.
THE GOOD: The goal of Don’t Starve is to scurry about the map and collect items necessary so your player character Wilson; a scientist who finds himself lost in the world of Don’t Starve, can survive. Along the way you find yourself facing enemies ranging from bees to pig demon creatures, danger is always lurking in Don’t Starve. You either learn to survive quick or you die, that’s pretty much how it works.
There’s different weapons in Don’t Starve such as sticks and shovels. You’ll need to collect food to regain health & energy as well. Don’t Starve also features a crafting system so players can update or improve whatever equipment they have found throughout the game. Gameplay difficulty also seems to change throughout night and day.
THE BAD: I didn’t really notice a central story arc for Don’t Starve, the main goal is to survive for as long as possible, and that’s basically it. Along the way you meet other characters and what not, but that’s not very much of a replacement for a good story.
THE UGLY: It’s difficult as all hell! Seriously the intense difficulty level for this cutesy looking game may be it’s only real downside, and some players may not pick it up again upon discovering this.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Don’t Starve is a fun, cute 2D action adventure game. I enjoyed how easy the item menu and what not was to use, though there was some practice needed to get things just right. The crafting system and different weapons where a great way to add different ways of play, but the crazy difficulty and lack of an actual story besides surviving for as long as you can, may put some players off.
